Fashion And Artificial Intelligence.

This semester, I kept myself very busy and focused on building my academic resume while simultaneously working toward becoming the best version of myself at this stage in my life. While doing so, I put myself into different kinds of work environments and social settings and noticed, as we all did, more than ever a significant rise in AI usage by students and adults; honestly, by the whole world, especially those with a presence on social media. This observation led me to consistently think about the field of fashion, which I intend to make my future career, and the increasing role of AI, as well as whether choosing a creative field puts me at risk of having my career replaced in the future.

Fashion is a field filled with multiple paths and integrations in today’s world. In fact, the fashion industry generates one to two trillion dollars in global revenue, making it an industry that is irreplaceable. But, with how fast technology is advancing, it is important for me to consider all the facts and potential implications.

I’ve come to believe, that rather than replacing creativity, artificial intelligence will have the ability to work alongside the fashion industry by improving efficiency, coming up with new, creative ideas, and opening new opportunities, demonstrating that fashion and AI can evolve and work together rather than exist in competition.

What is important about artificial intelligence existing and growing, in a society that tends to exploit anything with even the slightest vulnerability, is that if AI is used properly and placed under appropriate restrictions, the world would not have unrestricted access to genuinely infinite, intelligent, and highly capable knowledge. When misused, this level of access can lead society toward failure rather than greatness (which is most likely impossible to achieve, but it only takes one person for a change to happen!). Humans will always be irreplaceable because we are physical, emotionally intelligent beings, making us a unique and irreplaceable species on Earth. The fact that humans have been able to create and advance technology to the point where answers are accessible anytime and anywhere, highlights our intelligence and innovation; but, it is especially important for younger generations to learn how to use these tools responsibly and effectively. I believe, if there is more and better control, ethical use, and intentional integration, fashion and artificial intelligence can become the greatest partners.

Fashion has always reflected the state of society, culture, and technological progress, and AI is simply another tool that can influence how the industry evolves. Rather than replacing designers or, lets say, creative thinkers, AI has the potential to support them by assisting with trend analysis, innovation of materials, and production efficiency, allowing humans to focus more deeply on creativity and emotional connection.

As I’ve said in almost every blog, fashion is about self-expression and human experience, elements that cannot be (hopefully) replicated by artificial intelligence. While AI can generate designs or predict trends based on data, it lacks personal perspective, individual/lived experiences, and emotional depth. These human qualities are what give fashion meaning and individuality. As long as humans remain at the center of creative decision-making, AI can function as a resource rather than a threat.

To test that theory, I decided to ask ChatGPT what its predictions are for 2026 fashion trends based on the data it has gathered. The exact question I asked was: “Create an illustration of a trend that you predict will be happening next in the fashion industry, a full outfit of a model with accessories for 2026.”

This is what it generated:

This particular outfit is very fashionable and likely has some accuracy since it is based on trend analysis; however, it lacks personality and expression, and not everyone will be drawn to trends like this. Despite this, it is still very intriguing, and some of the accessories or garments may become trendy and peak in popularity, so there are both pros and cons, you see.

I, also, think that responsible AI use within fashion could lead to more sustainable practices. The world is prioritizing sustainability now more than ever, especially with how polluted, exploited, and honestly bullied the Earth has been and become. When technology is controlled and used with intention, it has the ability to benefit both the industry and society as a whole. At the same time, ignoring or rejecting AI altogether could be just as harmful as misusing it, as it would prevent any useful progress and solutions that could help reduce waste and environmental damage.

Right now, from what I know, AI has helped promote sustainability in the fashion industry by generating ideas that make sustainability more realistic. Realistically, fashion can never be fully sustainable, that’s almost impossible. However, being part of a mission that aims to minimize its impact is where AI can help, by offering solutions and new ideas on how to improve.

Overall, the future of fashion does not depend on resisting artificial intelligence, but on learning how to integrate it in ways that would preserve creativity, ethics, and human value, even if that means challenging traditional methods and being uncomfortable with change. Sometimes, discomfort in this sense is brave, evolving, and a necessary step toward achieving change that would ultimately benefit humans.
