In today’s trend-chasing world, it’s easy to confuse being fashionable with simply wearing what’s popular. But there’s a difference between having style and following hype.
When a piece becomes overexposed, especially through teens who overuse or exploit it, it often loses the aspect of it that makes it special, turning into a uniform rather than a statement. And trust me, I’m not saying I haven’t drawn inspiration from trends like cheetah print or mini shorts, I definitely have. But I always try to add my own spin, my own personality into my outfits.
Real style thrives on rarity, individuality, and intention. It’s not about what’s trending on TikTok, Instagram, or Snapchat; it’s about how something reflects you before it reflects a trend cycle or something. Like I’ve said before, there’s no one definition of style or fashion; it’s entirely personal. Your appearance, your energy, and your outfit already make it your own!
That’s really the point of this blog entry: exploring what’s considered truly “fashion” in today’s industry, and how certain pieces can lose their uniqueness once they become overdone.
For example, when every other person is rocking gold chain necklaces with a cross or marine-print tops (which, for the record, I’m currently obsessed with), they start to feel less like a personal choice and more like a trend uniform.
But this isn’t about gatekeeping. It’s about intention. I’m not here to tell you to avoid trends, in fact, I love when people get inspired by others and express themselves through pieces that happen to be popular. Fashion is, at its core, about expression. And there’s no right or wrong way to enjoy it. The key is to make it your own, whether that means remixing a trend or simply wearing what makes you feel good. Style isn’t about fitting in. It’s about standing out, even subtly.
So back to my question: When everyone wears it, is it still fashion? I think, to an extent, it is. There’s beauty in the collective energy that comes from people embracing the same look. But when everyone wears the same thing, without variation or personality, it starts to feel less like fashion and more like a formula. Fashion, at its best, is a language of individuality. That’s why the magic happens when someone takes what’s trendy and transforms it into something unmistakably them.
Think about the runway. When models strut down wearing the most bizarre, beautiful, or literally confusing pieces, it challenges everything we think fashion is supposed to be. These looks often leave us wondering: How would anyone wear that in real life? But that’s the point. High fashion isn’t always about practicality, it’s about imagination, vision, and bold statements. These pieces aren’t just clothes; they’re art. They reflect the designer’s creativity and the evolving spirit of fashion itself.
Fashion is one of the few art forms we live in every day, and that’s what makes it so…fashion. Unlike a painting or a sculpture, an outfit moves through the world with you, it’s how you show up before you even speak. That’s why authenticity matters more than approval. When you dress to express rather than impress, you begin to curate a wardrobe that tells your story, not someone else’s. Trends will always come and go, but personal style has staying power because it evolves with who you are, not what the world tells you to be.
And yes, even if the world eventually falls in love with these once “weird” runway designs, they often come with a price tag that makes them inaccessible to many. Still, high fashion exists to disrupt, provoke, and inspire. It reminds us that fashion isn’t just about what’s trending; it’s about what’s daring.
I’m well aware, and honestly, a little nervous, that this blog might come off as repetitive or too similar to my previous ones. But there’s something more important to keep in mind: some ideas are worth revisiting, especially when they reflect ongoing thoughts and evolving perspectives. Style isn’t a one-time conversation, it’s a dialogue that deepens the more we explore it.
In the end, fashion loses its power when it becomes predictable. True style lies in how we interpret clothing, not in how many others are wearing it. Whether you’re in a trending piece or something totally off the radar, what matters most is that it reflects who you are. Because when you wear something with intention, confidence, and authenticity, that’s when it stops being just fashion and becomes something far more powerful: style.
