At some point, we’ve all asked ourselves how to put together an outfit that is both presentable and, at times, a statement. There are many different techniques for curating an outfit, and I’m not saying it’s wrong to just throw something on and go with it. Pleasee feel free to do that, because ,sometimes, our current world lacks spontaneity. However, I want to share some ideas on ways to put together two pieces of clothing if you’re looking for inspiration.
Let’s start with the different combinations: tight on tight, baggy on baggy, baggy on tight, and tight on baggy. All of these combinations can look great, depending on how you wear them. For example, you could pair a tank top with baggy jeans or wear an oversized tee with flared leggings (which are tight). It’s all about how those clothes sit on your body to determine which “size” should go with which.
Often, if the jeans look too baggy on me and I wear an oversized shirt, it can appear just not right or abnormal. However, if the jeans are medium baggy and paired with an oversized tee, it can look really cool.
Purses and accessories like belts have also been incredibly impactful in styling a look. I think ever since I reached the age of 17 or 18, I’ve realized how helpful and actually influential a good purse can be. It doesn’t have to be branded; for me, it all depends on how many pockets it has…I got off track, but having a good white or black purse,a neutral color, can go with literally everything. Alternatively, having a bold red purse can make a strong statement and may inspire people.
Accessories like a chain necklace, popular among many people (especially those with a cross), or hats like beanies, headbands, and caps can be the key pieces you need to change the whole look for both males and females in certain cases.
Shoes apply to this as well. But do they…? I’ve recently been discovering mini heels and ballet flats, and I’ve realized how well they go with everything, literally everything. However, it sometimes depends on the size of the shoe (and I don’t mean the literal size; I’m referring to the diameter, shape, and structure of it) as well as its color.
Let’s not forget about cowboy boots that, in my case were so underrated… they can go with everything.
But, it also depends on your personal style. You might be the type of person who likes to combine colors that contradict each other, or you might be someone like me who prefers to pair colors that complement each other on the color wheel. Of which both are super interesting and fashionable in my opinion.
Heels and jeans are my new revelation, surprisingly. I’ve never realized how important and life changing your shoes can be for your outfit! I know that’s controversial since most of the attention is on the outfit itself, not the shoes. But it also depends on what bottoms you’re wearing (like shorts, where you can clearly see the shoes, or a skirt or pants that cover them). A lot of people care only about their shoes, while many couldn’t care less about them. But let me tell you, heels and bootcut jeans are the new “it” in my life.
So the final question, or I guess statement, is how to style, and is there a guide? The answer, if there is one, is nah. It’s a pretty chill response. I think if someone is going out of their way to try different styles, shoes, jewelry (gold/silver/rope/crystals), and even makeup, it’s already going to spice up their outfits and make heads turn, if that’s your goal; to stand out. And if you’re not in the mood to step out of your comfort zone, that’s okay too because you already have your own guide and way of styling the particular type of garments you have.
